Rays' Daniel Robertson: Starts at short, plays outfield Sunday

Robertson, who drew the start at shortstop for Tim Beckham (hip flexor) in Sunday's 7-4 Grapefruit League loss to the Yankees, also was deployed in left field, Marc Topkin of the The Tampa Bay Times reports.

Analysis:

Robertson singled and walked over four plate appearances while seeing time both at shortstop and in left field. That mirrors the same plan that the Rays have already deployed with Beckham this spring in an effort to maximize the versatility of their roster. Despite it being Robertson's first game in the outfield during his pro career, he acquitted himself well, according to manager Kevin Cash. "With Beck with the hip flexor, we've got to start thinking about covering ourselves in different situations," Cash said. "Pretty impressed with how (Robertson) handled being out there; he looked really comfortable."
