Pirates' Steven Brault: Puts best foot forward Saturday

Brault limited the Tigers to one run in four innings Saturday, giving up four hits and one walk while striking out three.

Analysis:

He's competing for the team's fifth starter job against the likes of Drew Hutchison, Tyler Glasnow and Trevor Williams. Brault's biggest advantage may be that he's the only lefty among the bunch. His ceiling isn't as high as some of the others, but his floor isn't as low, either. He's compiled a 3.45 ERA in 15.2 innings, but his 1.34 WHIP is a tad high, in part because of an 8:5 K:BB. General manager Neal Huntington is expected to address the fifth starter competition during his Sunday radio show.
