Report: Yankees open to trading for 'short-term' shortstop

Rick Scuteri-USA TODAY Sports

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has spent the last 24 hours exploring contingency plans to replace injured shortstop Didi Gregorius.

With Gregorius expected to be out until at least May with a shoulder strain, the Yankees are reportedly open to trading for a "short-term" option at shortstop, one source told Anthony Rieber of Newsday.

The Yankees reassigned top prospect and shortstop Gleyber Torres to the minor leagues Tuesday and have Tyler Wade, Ronald Torreyes, Pete Kozma, and Ruben Tejada as potential internal options.

It was reported Tuesday that the Yankees were among three teams interested in Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed. The 27-year-old hit .218/.265/.299 with four home runs and 58 strikeouts across 90 games last season.

Should Cashman not want to go down the trade route, Alexei Ramirez remains on the free-agent market.
