Marlins' Tomas Telis: Still a possibility for Opening Day roster

Telis could break camp on the Marlins 25-man roster if A.J. Ellis (hamstring) isn't healthy by Opening Day, the Sun-Sentinel reports.

Analysis:

He's had a solid spring at the plate, slashing .308/.379/.423 through 26 at-bats, and Telis' efforts at improving his defense have not gone unnoticed. "Been with him for a couple years now. [It's] good to see him grow as a catcher defensively," Marlins starting catcher J.T. Realmuto said Monday. "Sometimes he gets a little anxious back there and he just has to settle down and let the ball come to him. Sometimes you see him get a little antsy and he'll try and catch the ball out in front instead of letting the ball travel to him. For him, he's been working on that a lot and in the past two weeks, he's gotten way better." If Ellis stays off the DL, Telis would almost certainly head back to Triple-A New Orleans, but if the 25-year-old continues to impress, Marlins manager Don Mattingly wouldn't rule out carrying three catchers on the roster.
