Padres' Jarred Cosart: Goes four innings Sunday

Cosart gave up two runs on five hits in a four-inning start Sunday. He struck out two and walked none in a loss to the Reds.

Analysis:

Cosart is one of several options fighting for one of the Padres' final two rotation spots this spring. Monday was also the first time the veteran righty was allowed to go longer than 1.2 innings in Cactus League action. The 26-year-old has been effective in his three appearances, posting a 4.05 ERA with a 4:1 K:BB. The improved control -- albeit in a small sample size -- is notable after he struggled with it last season (6.2 BB/9). This improvement may be a direct result of an adjustment to his delivery this past offseason. Manager Andy Green has yet to announce who will fill his remaining rotation and bullpen spots, but he mentioned that minor league options (or lack thereof) could factor into his decision. Cosart's progress this spring and lack of options make him a logical pick to make the Opening Day roster.
