The Cleveland Indians will be without Cody Anderson for the entire 2017 season, as the 26-year-old right-hander has opted to undergo Tommy John surgery after getting a second opinion on his wonky ulnar collateral ligament, the team announced Sunday.

In November, shortly after the Indians coughed up a 3-1 lead in the World Series, Anderson underwent surgery to repair an impingement in the back of his elbow joint, but he complained of renewed discomfort in early March and was diagnosed with a sprained UCL after being sent for an MRI.

Anderson posted a 6.68 ERA in 60 2/3 innings with Cleveland in 2016, getting relegated to the bullpen after eight brutal starts over the first couple months of the season, and was expected to provide rotation depth at Triple-A Columbus to open the campaign.
