Yankees' Bryan Mitchell: Competing for back-end bullpen spot

Mitchell will be one of five pitchers vying for the last two spots in the starting rotation, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

Analysis:

Mitchell suffered a toe injury in spring training last year that held him out for the better part of the season, but once healthy he pitched solely as a starter, working to a 3.24 ERA over five starts. With the top three spots seemingly accounted for, the 25-year-old righty will compete with Luis Cessa, Luis Severino, Chad Green, and Adam Warren for one of the remaining spots. Should Mitchell lose out, it's possible the Yankees will send him back down to the minors to stay stretched out as a starter, but he's also had some experience as a reliever and could be deployed in a long-relief role in the big league bullpen.
