Nationals' Max Scherzer: Uses normal grip Monday

Scherzer was able to play catch while using his normal fastball grip Monday, but still felt some soreness in the knuckle at the base of his right ring finger, The Washington Post reports.

Analysis:

To this point in the spring, Scherzer had been forced to grip the ball with only three fingers while throwing from flat ground, so this is progress. The Nats won't put him on a mound until he's able to throw without soreness, though, so at this point there's no timetable for when he'll be able to ramp up his activity level and start getting ready for Opening Day in earnest. Fortunately for Scherzer, the extended spring training schedule created to accommodate the WBC gives him plenty of time to get up to speed before the regular season begins, but if he is delayed too long, his workload in April could be restricted.
