Padres' Cesar Vargas: Will have to earn spot on roster as starter

Vargas will have to make the roster as a starter, AJ Casavell of MLB.com reports.

Analysis:

Vargas returned from the Mexican Winter League ready to compete for a roster spot this spring. It appears as though the Padres are taking a "starter or bust" approach with the 25-year-old, ruling out the possibility of making the roster as a reliever. Even with the Padres lack of talent in the starting pitching department, it would be hard to consider Vargas a favorite to win one of the remaining rotation spots. He showed some promise as a reliever as recently as 2015 in the Yankees organization (2.79 ERA over 67.2 innings with Double-A Trenton), but San Diego seems dead set on making him a starter.
