D-Backs agree to minors deal with De La Rosa

Almost two decades after signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks as an amateur free agent, Jorge De La Rosa has a shot at actually pitching for the major-league club.

The Diamondbacks agreed to a minor-league deal with the veteran left-hander on Sunday that will reportedly pay him $2.25 million if he makes the roster, according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

De La Rosa originally signed with the Diamondbacks in 1998, but only spent two seasons in the organization before signing in Mexico. He made his major-league debut in 2004 with the Milwaukee Brewers and played the last nine seasons with the Colorado Rockies.

The 35-year-old has spent the last 10 years almost exclusively as a starter, though Piecoro reports that he will compete for a spot in the bullpen.

De La Rosa went 8-9 with a 5.51 ERA and 1.64 WHIP in 134 innings for the Rockies last season, and owns a 4.53 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 85 appearances (82 starts) since 2014.
