Trout defends Phillies fans against Christie with tongue-in-cheek jab

Frank Victores / USA TODAY Sports

Rest easy, Philadelphia: Mike Trout has your back.

On Thursday, New Jersey governor Chris Christie riled up fans in the City of Brotherly Love when he called the Phillies "awful" before doubling up on their "angry, bitter" fan base.

But Trout, who grew up in Millville, N.J. - an hour drive from Philadelphia - and is an ardent Eagles fan, stood up for sports fans in the city with a dig at Christie's favorite NFL side.

"As an Eagles fan, we're passionate about the team and we want them to win and to do good," Trout said Saturday, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. "In sports in general, (Phillies fans) love their teams.

"I think he's a (Dallas) Cowboys fan, right? I was sorry to hear that."

Christie has not yet responded to Trout's comments, though we won't blame him if he never does.
