Yankees beat Betances in final arbitration case

Brad Penner / USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees recorded a significant win Saturday without even having to take the field.

Right-handed reliever Dellin Betances lost his arbitration hearing with the club and will earn $3 million in 2017 rather than the $5 million he requested, according to multiple reports.

Betances, who was in his first year of arbitration eligibility, earned $507,500 last season.

The 28-year-old has been one of the most heavily used and most dominant relievers over the past three seasons, logging 247 innings. He was leaned on once again in 2016 and earned his third straight All-Star appearance. In 73 outings, he posted a 3.08 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 126 strikeouts, while also converting 12 saves.

The hearing marked the final arbitration case of the winter and the Yankees' first since 2008.
