Dodgers' Sergio Romo: Deal finalized, not guaranteed to be setup man

Romo's deal with the Dodgers was made official Wednesday, but manager Dave Roberts wouldn't commit to him being his primary setup man, SB Nation reports.

Analysis:

The initial thought when Romo signed was that he would serve as the late-inning bridge to Kenley Jansen. Roberts dispelled that notion when he said Romo would pitch in the eighth at times, and at others he wouldn't. If last year's postseason run taught us anything, it was that the Dodgers' manager does not subscribe to old school roles that are set in stone for how he manages his pitchers. Roberts noted Romo's excellence against right-handed batters, so we should expect him to enter games against the righty-heavy portions of the opposition's lineups. Even without an eighth-inning role set in stone, he should still have plenty of opportunities to gather holds this season for a Dodgers club that is projected to win 90-plus games.
