Report: Giants agree to minor-league deal with David Hernandez
After the San Francisco Giants splurged in the offseason to acquire new closer Mark Melancon, the team has apparently added another veteran reliever to their bullpen during the first day of spring workouts for the club.
The Giants have agreed to a minor-league deal with right-hander David Hernandez, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
Hernandez should be in the mix for a role in Bruce Bochy's bullpen, which will look different from the unit that produced a 3.65 ERA last season, good for ninth in the National League.
The 31-year-old Hernandez spent the 2016 campaign with the Philadelphia Phillies, appearing in 70 games, posting a 3.84 ERA, while striking out 9.9 hitters per nine innings during 72 2/3 innings of work.
Once an established set-up man with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Hernandez owns an ERA of 4.10 over his seven-year career to go along with a 9.1 strikeout-per-nine-innings rate, as well as a 3.8 walks-per-nine-innings mark.
