The Toronto Blue Jays formally announced Thursday the signing of right-hander Joe Smith - the club's newest addition to the bullpen.

It's reported to be a one-year, $3-million deal. In order to make room for Smith on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated catcher A.J. Jimenez for assignment.

The 32-year-old Smith pitched for the Los Angeles Angels and the World Series-winning Chicago Cubs last season, combining for a 3.46 ERA with 18 walks and 40 strikeouts, but was subsequently left off the Cubs postseason roster.

Smith has been a very effective reliever for most of his career. From 2011-13 with the Cleveland Indians, he pitched to a steady 2.25 ERA with 220 strikeouts and a 1.06 WHIP. He's expected to be relied on heavily in the Blue Jays bullpen, joining Roberto Osuna, Jason Grilli, and newly signed left-hander J.P. Howell.

Jimenez, meanwhile, was drafted by the Blue Jays in 2008 and was once a top catching prospect. Injuries have slowed him down, though he's still well-regarded for his defense. He became expendable after the Blue Jays agreed to a minor-league deal with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and claimed Juan Graterol off waivers.
