Yankees have no intention of negotiating new contract with Betances

If there was any doubt the New York Yankees and reliever Dellin Betances were going to arbitration, general manager Brian Cashman certainly cleared that up.

The Yankees front office leader confirmed the two sides haven't engaged in any conversations about an extension and the club is prepared to let an arbitrator decide Betances' 2017 salary.

"Nothing has changed, we haven’t talked," Cashman said, according to George A. King III of the New York Post. "We have no intention of talking. It’s not close. Somebody else will make the decision."

Both sides were quite far apart when arbitration figures were exchanged earlier in the offseason. Betances, who has been one of the best late-inning relievers the past few years, filed for a $5-million base salary, while the Yankees countered with $3 million.

Hearings are scheduled for Feb. 17 where a third party will determine the player's salary based on what they feel is most appropriate. Betances is coming off a season where he combined for his highest ERA (3.08), but maintained a very solid FIP (1.78). He also posted a career high 15.3 strikeouts per nine innings and has been tremendously consistent since 2014, providing the Yankees with 8.6 WAR.
