Sale lobbies Porcello for Opening Day start
With three undeniable aces in Chris Sale, David Price, and Rick Porcello on the roster, the Boston Red Sox have a problem other MLB sides only dream of having: Who starts Opening Day?
Sale, the newest addition to Boston's rotation thanks to a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox in December, is placing his bets on the reigning AL Cy Young award winner.
"No one has said anything to us," Sale told MassLive's Jen McCaffrey. "If I had to pick, which my opinion means absolutely nothing, but I think out of respect you've got to go with Porcello. He was the best pitcher in the league last year. How do you deny that?
"But whichever way it falls it doesn't matter. We're all here for the same goal and that's winning ballgames."
Statistically, Porcello may be the best choice among the trio based on their performances in 2016:
Player | W-L | ERA | IP | WHIP |
---|---|---|---|---|
Porcello | 22-4 | 3.15 | 223 | 1.01 |
Price | 17-9 | 3.99 | 230 | 1.20 |
Sale | 17-10 | 3.34 | 226 2/3 | 1.04 |
In any case, however, good luck figuring that out, John Farrell.
