Report: Napoli still a possibility for Rangers

The Texas Rangers and James Loney agreed to a minor-league deal Friday, but despite the signing, the team still has their eye on another player who could make a serious difference to the team at first base.

Free agent Mike Napoli is still being considered by the Rangers, reports MLB.com's TR Sullivan.

Napoli has been linked to the Rangers since November, and was reportedly discussing a two-year agreement with the club at the end of December, but a deal never came to fruition.

After Mitch Moreland - who appeared in 147 games at first base for the Rangers last season - departed for the Boston Red Sox via free agency, the Rangers have had a need for a first baseman, and Napoli fits the bill.

The 35-year-old remains one of the top available hitters on the open market after belting 34 home runs and driving in 101 runs - both career highs - last season with the American League champion Cleveland Indians.

He was reportedly seeking a three-year deal in late November, but with the market for power hitters not unfolding the way it has in the past, an agreement of that length may be out of the question.

Napoli has already played with the Rangers on two occasions, with his only All-Star appearance being with the club in 2012, and the two sides apparently have a strong desire to reunite.

Over his 11-year career, the slugger owns a .252/.352/.480 slash line with 238 home runs and 678 RBIs.

He earned $7 million last season.
