Report: Nationals awaiting ownership approval to make additions

The Washington Nationals have tried to make several big splashes throughout the offseason, but so far, acquiring Adam Eaton from the Chicago White Sox has been their biggest acquisition.

After being unable to pull the trigger on trades for Chris Sale and Andrew McCutchen, and missing out on signing closer Kenley Jansen, the Nationals appear to be interested in acquiring free agents Greg Holland and Matt Wieters, but they can't spend any more money until ownership approves, according to sources of FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Rosenthal reports Nationals ownership was willing to splurge more than $80 million on Jansen in a "special circumstance," which doesn't appear to apply to Holland and Wieters.

While the Nationals are in need of a closer such as Holland, Rosenthal writes that Washington's front office apparently views other pressing needs as higher priorities than signing Wieters.

Both Eaton and Nationals superstar Bryce Harper recently tweeted to express their desire for the team to add both Holland and Wieters, but Washington's payroll already sits around $148 million, according to spotrac.

Holland is reportedly seeking a two-year deal with a one-year opt-out after missing the entire 2016 season rehabbing from Tommy John. Before the surgery, the 31-year-old saved 145 games and owed a 2.42 ERA across six seasons with the Kansas City Royals.

Wieters, 30, hit .243/.302/.409 with 17 home runs and 66 RBIs in 124 games last season. The four-time All-Star owns a career slash line of .256/.318/.421 with 117 home runs and 437 RBIs.

The Nationals already acquired catcher Derek Norris from the San Diego Padres earlier this offseason, and also have Jose Lobaton and Pedro Severino on the depth chart.
