Report: Padres, Myers nearing 6-year extension

Wil Myers appears ready to stay in San Diego for the long haul.

The Padres are reportedly nearing agreement on a six-year contract extension, sources told Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Myers had been entering his first year of arbitration eligibility. This extension, if completed, would cover all three of his arbitration years, as well as his first three years of free agency.

Myers, the 2013 AL Rookie of the Year in Tampa Bay, was acquired by the Padres in a three-way trade prior to the 2015 season. Injuries limited him to just 60 games in his first year out west, but he broke out this past season and played in over 100 games for the first time in his four-year career. The 26-year-old slashed .259/.336/.461 to go along with a career-high 28 home runs and 28 stolen bases over 157 games in 2016, and was a Gold Glove finalist at first base in his first season playing the position full time.

That production was enough to earn him his first career All-Star berth, where he was the lone representative of the host Padres at Petco Park.

Myers is widely seen as a pillar of the Padres' future as they rebuild, and the team has felt the same way. In November, general manager A.J. Preller expressed his desire to extend Myers, saying at the time that he'd "get the ball rolling" on negotiations.

For his career, Myers owns a .257/.331/.429 slash line with 55 homers, 211 RBIs, and 44 stolen bases over 392 games with the Padres and Rays.
