Twins sign Gimenez to minor-league deal

The Minnesota Twins have signed free-agent catcher Chris Gimenez to a minor-league deal, the team announced Thursday.

Gimenez was acquired by the Cleveland Indians from the Texas Rangers early in 2016, and appeared in just 68 games.

Over that span, he backed up Yan Gomes and Roberto Perez, slashing .216/.272/.331 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. While the eight-year veteran has never been an every-day catcher, he's made his mark with each team he's been.

With his move to the Twins, he's expected to serve as Jason Castro's backup

At one point in the 2016 season, Gimenez became Trevor Bauer's personal catcher, based on the bond they developed.

"Yeah, if he goes on the DL, I'd have to go on the DL," Bauer said to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian in July. "We're basically a package deal now."

Over his career, Gimenez owns a career .218/.297/.335 slash line with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs.
