Dodger blue: 5 right-handed bats worth pursuing

The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the market for a specific type of player.

Not only are they seeking a second baseman to replace the outgoing Chase Utley, but the ideal candidate should also be a right-handed hitter.

While talks for Minnesota's Brian Dozier have reportedly fizzled, here's a look at five other players Los Angeles should go after:

Logan Forsythe

2016 Stats
Team:
Tampa Bay Rays
Games Played: 127
HR: 20
Slash Line: .264/.333/.444

Logan Forsythe is another player the Dodgers had their eye on this offseason before they pursued Dozier instead. The 29-year-old Forsythe is the type of hitter who can bat anywhere in the order, and has proven to be a durable second baseman with some pop. After hitting 17 homers in 2015, Forsythe blasted 20 last year, and with a reasonable $8.5-million team option for 2018, he's definitely a coveted player.

Jedd Gyorko

2016 Stats
Team:
St. Louis Cardinals
Games Played: 128
HR: 30
Slash Line: .243/.306/.495

An under-the-radar player the Dodgers would be wise to pursue, Jedd Gyorko is a power hitter who's going to be severely underutilized in St. Louis. With Matt Carpenter moving over to first base, Jhonny Peralta, Aledmys Diaz, and Kolten Wong will start at third, shortstop, and second, respectively. That leaves Gyorko out of the equation, and if the Dodgers need a right-hander with 30-homer potential, he's the guy.

Jurickson Profar

2016 Stats
Team:
Texas Rangers
Games Played: 90
HR: 5
Slash Line: .239/.321/.338

Similar to Gyorko, switch-hitting Texas Rangers youngster Jurickson Profar has nowhere to play. Profar has no shot at supplanting Adrian Beltre, Elvis Andrus, or Rougned Odor, so his only shot is taking Ryan Rua's job at first base. Rua is a bigger power threat, however, so not only could the Dodgers likely get Profar cheap, but he could slot into everyday duties at second base. While Profar probably won't provide the pop that others on this list will, the former top prospect has never really been given a shot in the majors.

Brandon Phillips

2016 Stats
Team:
Cincinnati Reds
Games Played: 141
HR: 11
Slash Line: .291/.320/.416

It's become pretty clear that Cincinnati is very willing to deal veteran second baseman Brandon Phillips. Despite being 35, Phillips cranked 11 homers and had a reasonable slash line in 2016. That being said, he's regressing, and with his contract coming to an end following the 2017 season, Phillips would have to put up monster numbers. Otherwise, he's not a viable long-term option for the Dodgers.

Ian Kinsler

2016 Stats
Team:
Detroit Tigers
Games Played: 153
HR: 28
Slash Line: .288/.348/.484

Acquiring a player of Ian Kinsler's caliber would mean abiding by his demands, which include a no-trade clause. Not only that, but Kinsler won't waive the clause unless he's granted a contract extension in return. The 34-year-old could be a free agent after next season, but does have a $12-million club option for 2018. Given his recent power surge, Kinsler might be worth the money.
