Report: Reds could still trade Phillips to Braves

Despite reports that Brandon Phillips exercised his no-trade clause to veto a trade to the Atlanta Braves in November, it appears the book hasn't completely shut on the possibility of it happening.

A Cincinnati Reds source told ESPN's Jim Bowden there's "still a possibility" the veteran second baseman could be dealt to the Braves - a move that would benefit both sides.

From the Reds' point of view, it would clear a path for 22-year-old prospect Jose Peraza to play second base full time. In 72 games last year, he crushed the ball to the tune of a .324/.352/.411 slash line with three homers and 21 stolen bases.

For the Braves, Phillips could step into an everyday role at second base and provide leadership to franchise player Dansby Swanson at shortstop.

If a deal was struck, the Reds would pay most of Phillips' remaining $14 million he's owed in 2017, before he hits free agency following the season.

But before a trade can even happen, Reds executives "acknowledge that they made promises and assurances to Phillips that they are not living up to and will have to work through those issues directly with Phillips," Bowden reports.

Over his 15-year career in the majors, Phillips has spent the last 11 with the Reds. Over that span, he's been named to three All-Star games, and won four Gold Glove awards and one Silver Slugger, while becoming a fan favorite.

Last season, he slashed .291/.320/.416 with 11 home runs over 141 games.
