Report: Red Sox showing interest in Alvarez

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

In search of a designated hitter to replace the retired David Ortiz, the Boston Red Sox have Pedro Alvarez on their radar, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.

Alvarez would almost certainly be the DH, and the Red Sox would keep Hanley Ramirez at first base.

The 28-year-old spent his first six major-league seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, garnering an All-Star and Silver Slugger award in 2013. Last season was his lone year with the Baltimore Orioles, where he performed admirably.

Alvarez slashed .249/.322/.504 with 22 home runs and 49 RBIs in 109 games.

Given the price tag, it seems unlikely Boston continues to pursue Edwin Encarnacion. Other players on the table include Matt Holliday and Mike Napoli, as well as prospect Sam Travis.
