Catcher Rene Rivera, Mets agree to $1.75 million, 1-yr deal

NEW YORK (AP) Catcher Rene Rivera and the New York Mets have agreed to a $1.75 million, one-year contract, a raise of $50,000.

The 33-year-old, whose playing time increased after starter Travis d'Arnaud got hurt, hit .222 with six homers and 26 RBIs in 65 games this year and threw out 18 of 61 runners attempting to steal. He has a .213 career average in eight big league seasons.

His deal was announced ahead of the Friday night deadline for teams to offer 2017 contracts to unsigned players on their 40-man roster. Rivera would have been eligible for salary arbitration.
