Report: Brewers trying to trade Carter, Orioles not in play

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly looking to part ways with slugger Chris Carter through trade, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, just a few days after designating him for assignment to make room for Eric Thames, who signed a three-year, $16-million deal.

The Brewers hope to find a trade partner ahead of Friday's 8:00 p.m. non-tender deadline, and one team that's not in play, despite having a track record of taking on power hitters like Carter, is the Baltimore Orioles, according to Heyman.

Carter is coming off a career year in Milwaukee in which he hit 41 home runs - tied for the NL lead - along with 94 RBIs while appearing in 160 games for the first time, but also tied for the NL's most strikeouts (206).

The Carter-Orioles connection comes exactly a year after Baltimore traded for Mark Trumbo, who went on to hit a career-best and AL-leading 47 home runs and 108 RBIs with a .533 slugging percentage.

Mark Reynolds (37 home runs in 2012), Chris Davis (33 home runs in 2013), and Nelson Cruz (40 home runs in 2014), followed by Trumbo in 2016, are examples of sluggers that emerged as serious home-run threats while playing in Baltimore.
