Mariners' Rob Whalen: Traded to Mariners

The Braves traded Whalen (shoulder) to the Mariners on Monday for outfield prospect Alex Jackson, Jon Morosi of Fox Sports reports.

Analysis:

Whalen started five games and gave up 20 runs (18 earned) through 24.2 innings in his rookie season, although he did rack up 25 strikeouts. He was transferred to the 60-day DL on Sept. 17 with a shoulder injury, but should be ready to go come spring training. The Mariners just traded Taijuan Walker to the Diamondbacks, so it makes sense that they would add a young arm in Whalen who could potentially help fill a spot in the rotation.
