Mariners looking to add 1 more starting pitcher

Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto has one item left on his wishlist.

In trading away Taijuan Walker to acquire shortstop Jean Segura from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, Dipoto accomplished one goal in finding an elusive leadoff hitter for his lineup. With that box checked, the Mariners are now moving on to their next need in the rotation.

"Our focus is on the pitching. We're very comfortable with our position players," Dipoto said on MLB Network Radio Sunday. "We would like to find one more starting pitcher."

Considering the club dealt away a young, controllable starter in Walker to acquire Segura, Dipoto's claim corroborates the idea Seattle wasn't high on the 24-year-old, though that belief isn't held by Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen.

It's unclear if the Mariners intend to find a final starter through another trade or free agency. The latter isn't short on options, though a signing may not be on the horizon as some MLB sides appear hesitant to explore the open market until a new CBA is agreed upon.
