New York writer gives Ortiz 1st-place vote

At least one voter felt David Ortiz was the American League's best player.

While Mike Trout ran away with with the AL MVP award with 19 first-place votes, Ortiz stole one, as a New York-based writer gave his No. 1 spot to the retired slugger, who finished sixth in voting.

There wasn't much of an expectation for the former Boston Red Sox slugger to win, but it doesn't take away from the legendary season he had at 40 years old.

Ortiz slashed .315/.401/.620 with 38 home runs, 48 doubles, and 127 RBIs, but as a designated hitter, it would've been difficult to give him the award due to the fact that he doesn't have enough defensive metrics.

Not only was his first-place vote given to him by a New York writer, but his lone second-place vote was also from a writer in New York.

Over his 20-year career, Ortiz finished top-five in voting five times, but never won the award.
