San Diego Padres starter Colin Rea has undergone Tommy John surgery and will miss all of the 2017 season, according to multiple reports.

Rea was traded to the Miami Marlins in July, but - after injuring his elbow in his first start with the team - was subsequently traded back to the Padres and missed the remainder of the season.

It was reported in August that Rea wouldn't need surgery, opting for a platelet-rich plasma injection in its place. But after feeling discomfort in his injured elbow, the pitcher ultimately decided surgery was the best course of action.

After separate trades involving Rea and Drew Pomeranz - who was acquired by the Boston Red Sox - Padres general manager A.J. Preller was suspended 30 games by the league for failing to provide opposing teams with medical information.

In 19 starts in 2016, Rea posted a 4.82 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.
