The Seattle Mariners didn't wait long to get started on their offseason moves.

Seattle announced Thursday it has exercised outfielder Seth Smith's $7-million option for 2017, while declining the $4.25-million option on catcher Chris Iannetta.

Smith, who can play both corner outfield positions, hit .249/.342/.415 with 16 homers and 15 doubles last season - his second campaign in Seattle - while being used almost exclusively against right-handed pitching. The 34-year-old made just 33 of his 438 plate appearances in 2016 against southpaws, and all of his homers came against right-handers.

For his career, Smith owns a .261/.344/.447 line with 113 home runs over 10 seasons.

Iannetta, who joined the Mariners as a free agent last winter, posted a .210/.303/.329 line in 94 games last season.
