Report: Fernandez, friends had 'strong odor of alcohol' after fatal crash

The bodies of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and his two friends, who all died in a boating accident, gave off a "strong odor of alcohol" when they were discovered, according to Julie K. Brown of the Miami Herald, who obtained a search warrant affidavit on Wednesday.

The warrant alleges investigators found evidence claiming the driver of the boat was travelling at a high speed with "recklessness" that was "exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol."

There has not been any confirmation if Fernandez was indeed the driver of the vessel, although the Herald writes that acquaintances of the deceased pitcher suspect he was driving.

According to Brown, the toxicology reports on Fernandez, Emilio Jesus Macias, and Eduardo Rivero are complete but have not been released by state investigators. The autopsies on the three young men have also not been released.

Fernandez, Macias, and Rivero were seen at American Social Bar & Kitchen prior to the accident, and a time- and date-stamped receipt from the bar with alcohol purchases on it were found in the pocket of one of the men after the accident.

The crash remains under investigation by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The two-time All-Star and his two peers crashed into a jetty at high speed just after 3 a.m. ET on Sept. 25.
