White Sox congratulate civic rival Cubs on historic pennant

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

Perhaps the most intense civic rivalry in North American sports was put aside for a brief moment Saturday night.

When the Chicago Cubs became National League champions for the first time since 1945 on Saturday, everybody in the Windy City began celebrating - even on the South Side. The crosstown White Sox quickly reached out to congratulate their bitter rivals in a rare show of civic unity.

Although seeing the White Sox send their respects to the Cubs had to hurt supporters of the South Siders, they can take comfort in having had the most recent World Series parade in Chicago. The White Sox ended their 88-year drought when they won their third title in 2005; they also bested the Cubs in six games in 1906, which remains the only all-Chicago Fall Classic in history.

The White Sox weren't the only Chicago team to start flying the W on Saturday, as all of the city's major sports teams got together to congratulate the Cubs on their historic triumph 71 years in the making.
