Liriano diagnosed with mild concussion after line drive to head

The Toronto Blue Jays could be without Francisco Liriano for a while, as the veteran left-hander has been diagnosed with a mild concussion after being struck in the back of the head by a Carlos Gomez line drive Friday, head trainer George Poulis told reporters.

Liriano was taken to a Texas hospital after his club's 5-3 victory over the Rangers in Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Friday. He'll have to go through more concussion tests Sunday, Poulis said, and there is no timetable for his return.

Gomez, who was Liriano's teammate with the Minnesota Twins from 2010 through 2012, was visibly shaken following Friday's matinee at Globe Life Park as he awaited word on his buddy's condition.

"It was so scary," Gomez said. "You don't want anybody to get hit that close to the face. It was scary. You don't want to hurt anybody."

Still, the 32-year-old was cleared to fly home with his teammates Friday night, and MLB.com's Gregor Chisolm reported Liriano was "doing well" Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre. The night before, Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna seemed confident Liriano would be all right.

"Pretty scary; that could happen to any one of us," said Osuna. "I feel bad for him, but I know he's going to be fine."
