Phillies fire hitting coach after finishing last in scoring

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia Phillies officially announced Monday that hitting coach Steve Henderson will not have his contract renewed for the 2017 season.

Henderson was the only member of the Phillies' coaching staff to be let go after the club finished 71-91 and missed the playoffs for a fifth straight year.

Part of the reason for the Phillies' struggles was an inefficient offense. They ranked last in the majors in runs scored, 29th in average, on-base percentage, and slugging.

Henderson joined the Phillies in 2010 as an outfield and baserunning coordinator. He was promoted to hitting coach in 2012.
