Rick Renteria is once again the manager of a major-league team in Chicago.

The Chicago White Sox officially announced the hiring of the 54-year-old, who served as their bench coach this season, on Monday. Renteria replaces Robin Ventura.

"I appreciate this tremendous opportunity to manage the Chicago White Sox," Renteria said in a release. "It is a great honor as well as a great responsibility. Over the past season as Robin Ventura's bench coach, I have gotten to know the players and staff very well, and I look forward to helping us achieve our goals together."

It was reported late last week that the White Sox front office was prepared to offer an extension to Ventura should he wish to remain with the club. Ventura, however, announced Sunday that he wouldn't return, citing the need for a new voice in the clubhouse.

Renteria's first and only season as a major-league manager came in 2014 with the Chicago Cubs. He went 73-89 before being unceremoniously relieved of his duties when the North Siders opted to hire Joe Maddon.

The White Sox stretched their postseason drought to eight seasons after wrapping up the year 78-84, good for a fourth-place finish in the division.

Renteria will be the team's fourth manager since 1998.
