Blue Jays, Yankees clear benches after exchanging beanballs

There's some bad blood brewing between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees.

After Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson was hit on the elbow by a Luis Severino pitch in the first inning Monday, Toronto responded in the second with J.A. Happ plunking Yankees third baseman Chase Headley. Manager Joe Girardi was ejected for voicing his displeasure with the incident.

Both clubs were issued a warning, but that didn't stop New York from retaliating. Severino threw twice at Justin Smoak to begin the bottom of the second inning, emptying both benches and earning Severino his own ejection, as well as getting coaches Rob Thomson and Larry Rothschild thrown out of the game.

Sitting 5 1/2 games behind the Baltimore Orioles for the second wild-card spot in the American League, the Yankees are hoping to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the Blue Jays that would almost certainly end their postseason aspirations.
