De La Rosa to undergo stem cell treatment on elbow

In an effort to avoid the lengthy recovery time of another Tommy John surgery, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Rubby De La Rosa will undergo stem cell treatment on his injured right elbow Tuesday, manager Chip Hale told reporters Monday.

The right-hander previously underwent Tommy John in 2011, and a second one on his elbow could prove disastrous for his career.

De La Rosa pitched only 50 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks this season due to a sprained ulnar collateral ligament.

He posted a 4.26 ERA in 2016 before being shutdown for the season earlier in September.
