Wong's face-plant opens floodgates at Wrigley
Kolten Wong made just his third career start in left field for the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday afternoon. That lack of experience showed early in the Cardinals' matinee against the Chicago Cubs.
Wong appeared to approach Anthony Rizzo's first-inning base hit like an infielder going after a ground ball, and it clearly didn't work. The 25-year-old slipped on a patch of grass and face-planted into the grass while kicking the ball away. As a result, Kris Bryant came around to score without a throw while Rizzo ended up on second base.
Wong's miscue was only the start of a brutal first inning for the Cardinals - who are desperate for a win to stay in the wild-card chase - as two more runs came around to score in the inning to give the North Siders an early 4-0 lead.
