Steven Matz won't pitch again in 2016, as the New York Mets announced Tuesday the left-hander will undergo season-ending surgery to remove a bone spur in his elbow.

Matz is also being shut down due to shoulder soreness, though he won't require any surgery for it. The Mets expect the 25-year-old to be ready for spring training.

The 25-year-old hasn't pitched since Aug. 14, when he was shut down due to the elbow and shoulder issues. It was thought that he might be able to return this week until he felt shoulder soreness during a throwing session, prompting the Mets to shut him down again.

Matz finishes his 2016 season with a 3.40 ERA and 129 strikeouts over 132 1/3 innings pitched.
