Houston Astros closer Ken Giles was carted off the field prior to Saturday's game with the Los Angeles Angels after he was struck on the right wrist by a line drive during batting practice.

"(It) wasn't good," manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. "He's not in very good shape. It looked like a ball off of the bat hit him pretty hard. He was already starting to bruise in the wrist area. He'll be taken in. (It) looked very painful."

Giles was standing on the field when he was struck. He was seen kneeling and appeared to be in significant pain while talking to the Astros' training staff before he was carted off.

The right-hander was tagged for six runs in just one-third of an inning Friday and charged with the loss. Prior to that outing, Giles owned a 3.00 ERA in his last 17 appearances, striking out 27 while converting 12 of 13 save opportunities.

Houston enters play Saturday sitting two games back of the second wild card.
