After the Washington Nationals fell victim to a 6-5 extra-innings loss at the hands of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, the Chicago Cubs officially secured the best record in the league, giving them home-field advantage through the National League Championship Series.
On Friday afternoon, the Cubs earned their 98th victory of the season, defeating the St. Louis Cardinals 5-0, hitting the mark for the first time since 1945, while also tying a franchise record for wins at Wrigley Field with 56.
Chicago's 98-55 record is the best in baseball, and their 56 wins at home is tops around the league as well.
The Cubs clinched the NL Central division title on Sept. 16, their first since 2008.
