Blue Jays' Benoit suffered torn calf during brawl with Yankees

Monday night's brawl at Rogers Centre is proving to be a costly one for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Manager John Gibbons told reporters on Tuesday that reliever Joaquin Benoit sustained a torn calf while running in from the bullpen to take part in the melee with the New York Yankees.

When asked if Benoit's injury could be season-ending, Gibbons replied, "We don't know yet."

Speaking with reporters before Tuesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles, Benoit said the estimated time for his return is approximately two-to-three weeks.

Benoit appeared to trip while he and the rest of the Blue Jays' bullpen raced to the infield. He then emerged from the fracas limping and had to be helped down the dugout steps by trainers.

Since joining the Blue Jays in a trade from the Seattle Mariners in July, Benoit has been nearly untouchable, sporting a 0.38 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched.

Benoit wasn't the only Blue Jays player to emerge from the melee with an injury. Second baseman Devon Travis jammed his shoulder while in the middle of the pile, and re-aggravated the previous injury later in the game on a swing. Travis, who told reporters Tuesday that he's feeling somewhat better, is being listed as day to day.
