Orioles' Davis has precautionary X-rays on sore hand
Chased from Tuesday's 11-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the fifth inning due to left hand soreness, Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis was omitted from the lineup Wednesday at Tropicana Field and sent for precautionary X-rays on his ailing hand, manager Buck Showalter told reporters.
Davis, who went 2-for-3 and smashed his 35th homer of the campaign in Tuesday's win, said after his early exit, however, that the soreness has been there "since April" and noted he doesn't expect to miss an extended period of time because of it.
"Some days it hurts, some days it hurts more," Davis told MLB.com's Brittany Ghiroli. "You try to find a way through it."
Despite battling soreness for much of the season, though, Davis has been a major part of Baltimore's prolific offense, posting an .827 OPS (115 OPS+) with 35 homers and 19 doubles through 134 games.
Steve Pearce started at first base in his stead Wednesday.
Heading into their series finale against the Rays, the Orioles (76-62) were one game behind the Toronto Blue Jays (77-61) and Boston Red Sox (77-61) for first place in the American League East.
