Collins worried Matz could be out for season
The New York Mets have scratched left-hander Steven Matz from his start Thursday after he suffered a setback in his recovery from a shoulder injury.
Manager Terry Collins addressed the media on Tuesday and acknowledged that he's worried Matz won't pitch again this season.
When Matz spoke to reporters, he seemed less fearful that this marked the end of his season. He said he's suffering from a shoulder impingement, but believes he'll return sooner rather than later.
"This is not a surgery-type deal," Matz added.
Matz was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 22 with a shoulder strain and rotator cuff irritation. It isn't the first time he dealt with an injury this season.
In May, he missed a start due to a "flare-up" in his elbow. A month after that, the team revealed that he had a bone spur causing issues in the joint, and he's expected to have offseason surgery to remove it.
In 2010, he underwent successful Tommy John surgery.
This season, Matz is 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA in 132 1/3 innings of work, while striking out 129 batters.
