The Chicago Cubs hope to have their most veteran starter back in the rotation by the end of the weekend.

After throwing a bullpen session Thursday without any signs of discomfort, John Lackey is scheduled to return from the 15-day disabled list Sunday against the San Francisco Giants as long as he feels good Friday, the team told reporters.

"I feel fine," Lackey said Thursday, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers. "I feel like I can pitch in a game."

Lackey was placed on the disabled list Aug. 19 after experiencing shoulder discomfort against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 37-year-old has shored up the back end of the Cubs' rotation this season, crafting a 3.41 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 24 starts.
