Watch: Tigers irate with umpire after 4 ejections
Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez had to be restrained by manager Brad Ausmus after he was ejected in the middle of an at-bat during the third inning of a contest against the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.
Martinez took exception with home plate umpire Mike Everitt's strike zone, arguing a called strike before getting tossed and being pulled back into the dugout by his skipper and teammate J.D. Martinez.
An angry Martinez continued to fume, throwing his helmet onto the field before being replaced by Tyler Collins, who inherited an 0-1 count.
It was the fourth ejection of Martinez's career.
"I just told him he was having a bad night," Martinez told reporters following the 3-2 loss.
Two innings later, Everitt heard it from the crowd at Comerica Park after he also ejected Ausmus and hitting coach Wally Joyner. Bench coach Gene Lamont took over for Ausmus as manager.
Everitt wasn't done there either. He would then eject J.D. Martinez in the sixth inning as well after another questionable strike call.
"If he's going to call those pitches on our hitters, we need those pitches called on their hitters," Ausmus said. "That's really the gripe."
He added: "Mike Everitt's a professional. I've known him for years. I thought he had an off night tonight but I'm no way concerned about him."
