Jake Peavy's rocky 2016 campaign took another rough turn Saturday, as the San Francisco Giants right-hander was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain just hours before his scheduled start, the team announced.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 21. Right-hander Albert Suarez was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move, and will start in Peavy's place against Atlanta.

Peavy was scheduled to return to the rotation Saturday after prolonged struggles had bumped him to the bullpen after the trade deadline. The former Cy Young winner didn't fare much better in relief, posting a 6.75 ERA in just eight innings during the month of August.

The 35-year-old owns a career-worst 5.55 ERA and 1.423 WHIP while allowing 10.2 hits per nine innings in 29 outings (and 21 starts) this year.
