Watch: Red Sox lose on walkoff error for 2nd time in 2016

Though they remain tied with the Toronto Blue Jays for first place in the American League East, the Boston Red Sox have some holes.

For the second time this season, the Red Sox found themselves slinking off the diamond Wednesday night at Tropicana Field, felled by a defensive gaffe that lifted their opponent - this time, the Tampa Bay Rays - to a walkoff victory. Frankly, it was a fitting end to an altogether lousy night for Boston.

After Rick Porcello squandered a one-run lead on a solo shot from Evan Longoria in the bottom of the eighth, one inning after rookie sensation Andrew Benintendi was helped off the field with a knee injury, Boston's tough evening culminated with a costly error from reliever Heath Hembree, whose two-out miscue allowed Luke Maile to score from second and send Tampa Bay to a 4-3, walkoff victory in the bottom of the 11th.

"I was just busting my butt trying to get to the bag," Hembree said afterward, according to MLB.com. "Was just running a little bit too fast. Knew the ball was coming and trying to find the bag, it was just, I just dropped it. ... It's a play I should make 10 out of 10 times."

John Farrell, Boston's manager, agreed.

"That's kind of a routine 3-to-1 play," Farrell said. "Unfortunately it comes at a time when there's two outs and a guy is on the move. It ends up being the difference in this one. Yeah, that's a routine play."
