Perez's 2-run triple lifts Brewers over Rockies 6-4
MILWAUKEE (AP) Hernan Perez's key triple led to a messy celebration for Brent Suter and Corey Knebel in the Milwaukee Brewers clubhouse Tuesday night.
Perez hit a two-run triple in the seventh inning, lifting the Brewers to a 6-4 comeback win over the Colorado Rockies.
The hit made a winner out of Suter (1-1), who pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his first career victory. Knebel pitched the ninth for his first career save, and their teammates doused them in whatever they could find after the game.
''They are going to share the (game) ball, mail it back and forth to each other in the offseason, maybe, to kind of caress and live that moment again,'' Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson joked. ''But they enjoyed the shower together. I can tell you I did see that - a little mustard, ketchup, all of the above. It was great.''
Milwaukee has won three consecutive games after dropping eight of nine.
Perez hit an 0-2 pitch from Carlos Estevez into the right-field corner. Jonathan Villar scored from second and Ryan Braun from first when Daniel Descalso's cutoff throw to the plate was wide and got past catcher Nick Hundley to give Milwaukee a 5-4 lead.
Suter picked up his first career victory in his first relief appearance after making his major league debut in a spot start Friday night.
''So happy right now, very glad for the team that we won, we're on a little winning streak,'' Suter said. ''Personally, it's very satisfying to be honest with you to get a big league win, not many people can say that.''
Knebel got his first save in his 75th game, getting Hundley to ground into a fielder's choice with two runners on to end it.
The Brewers trailed 4-2 in the seventh when pinch-hitter Orlando Arcia doubled with one out, chasing reliever Jake McGee. Boone Logan (2-3) then gave up a double to Villar to make it 4-3, struck out Scooter Gennett and intentionally walked Braun.
Estevez, recalled from the minors on Monday, entered and threw two hard strikes to Perez, but the Brewers third baseman swatted the rookie's third pitch into the right-field corner to give Milwaukee the lead for good.
The Brewers extended the lead to 6-4 on a sacrifice fly by Domingo Santana in the eighth.
''It's always frustrating when you are winning late and don't put the game away,'' Colorado manager Walt Weiss said. ''You've got a few guys down there right now searching for their confidence.''
Nolan Arenado hit a three-run home run, his 33rd, for Colorado.
Anderson allowed three runs, six hits and two walks while striking out seven in five innings.
GRAY BOUNCES BACK
Colorado starter Jon Gray struck out 10 in six innings. He allowed two runs, four hits and three walks to bounce back from a three-game slump where he gave up 18 earned runs in just 11 innings.
RARE OCCURRENCE
It was the fourth time in Brewers history that teammates recorded their first career win and first career save in one game. The last time was when Donovan Hand got a win and Alfredo Figaro a save on Sept. 28, 2013 at the New York Mets.
FAN INJURED
A female fan was injured when struck by a line drive off the bat of Hundley in the second inning. She was worked on for about 8 minutes and removed from the stands on a stretcher and taken to an ambulance. No further information on her condition was given.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Rockies: 2B DJ LeMahieu, second in the NL in batting at .344, was scratched from the lineup with a sore left wrist he injured during a check swing Monday. ''I don't think it's anything major,'' Weiss said. ... CF Charlie Blackmon returned to the lineup after not starting four games with a bruised right toe.
Brewers: Three injured players - RHPs Junior Guerra and Jacob Barnes, and 3B Will Middlebrooks - participated in a multi-inning simulated game at Miller Park. Counsell said Guerra (right elbow inflammation) likely would make a rehab start Saturday for Triple-A Colorado Springs, and that Barnes (right forearm strain) and Middlebrooks (lower right leg strain) likely won't return until September.
UP NEXT
Rockies: LHP Tyler Anderson (4-4) has given up nine earned runs over 10 innings in his last two starts and will pitch in the final game of the three-game series.
Brewers: RHP Zach Davies (9-6) has lost three consecutive games (15 earned runs in 16 innings) and will make his fourth attempt to earn his 10th win.
